Researchers' Night 2016 – Science is the Name of the Game
Thursday, 22nd September, 16:00-22:00 Entrance free!
You are invited to join us for the annual event of Researchers' Night - a special evening this year under the theme of gamification, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Science and the European Union. Activities for all ages.
For families, youth and children:
You are invited to take part in a range of mind games and workshops. Make and wear your own wearable accessories, “Lego Lights”, giant chess game, strategy games, 'sewing' with wooden building blocks, and much more.
Researchers from the Volcani Center and the Hebrew University Faculty of Agriculture will reveal surprising scientific developments relating to familiar edible plants, and some that are less familiar.
Meet the scientists:
Dr. Aviv Dombrowsky – “Two are better than one” Plants can be affected by soil-based viruses that attack the planting cycles. The use of virus-resistant shoots can halt the cycle of infection. Display of diseased fruit and resistant shoots.
Professor Elazar Flick – “The apple will dwell with the lettuce in the refrigerator” How to assess the shelf life of plants and vegetables with a ‘warm shower.’ Display of various storage methods and tips for storing food in your home refrigerator.
Dr. Moshe Kostiokobski – “Satisfying food that doesn’t get wormy” Insects love grains and dry food as much as we do. Display of various methods for eliminating insects. And a few insects as well.
Dr. Shmuel Galili – “Hummus, it’s not just for spreading”  Israelis regard themselves as hummus experts. But the lesser-known strains have nutritional value and can be a healthy food substitute. Display of colorful hummus strains, hummus flour and a hummus beverage.
Professor Nativ Dudai – “Fresh herbs, beyond smell and taste”Herbs and perfumes contain etheric oils produced by a refining process. Display of herbs and perfume plants, the process of obtaining etheric oils, live demonstration.

Lecture and workshop: Saving the Salvia (Sage) (19:00-20:30)
The Givat Ram Botanical Garden preserves and propagates plants from various regions of the world, particularly those native to Israel. Before paving began on the Begin Highway, botanists managed to rescue the last few wild salvia in the area and transplant them in the Botanical Garden. Some 22 years later, in the winter of 2016, the Botanical Garden embarked on a project to distribute salvia plants to community gardens in Jerusalem in an effort to restore them to nature and increase awareness of plant preservation. Dr. Ori Fragman-Sapir, head of the Botanical Gardens, and Maya Aboutbul, director of the botanical nursery, will discuss preservation of plants and plants in danger of extinction, focusing on the salvia. They will also conduct a workshop on vegetative propagation (cuttings). Participants will be invited to take home fresh salvia cuttings.

Spoken poetry evening: Poetry Slam (20:00-22:00)
To mark Researchers' Night, six leading Spoken Word artists will appear at the Science Museum to perform their response to theGames in Light and Shadow exhibition. After visiting the Museum last month and carefully exploring the recesses of their poetic minds for the exact words to describe what they had seen, heard, and felt, they will share their impressions with us, accompanied on the keyboard by Kobi Ben-Ezra and directed by Arik Aber. The performers include
Lucy Iyov, Alan Potales, Ro’i Ravitzky, Yotam Manor, Yiftach Leibowitz, Tami Tut.
